I’ll be honest; I almost always ignore the rest days you schedule into your programs. Most weeks I’ll train five or six days straight before a rest day, and on very rare occasions, I’ll go seven days straight before a rest. Overall, my recovery seems solid since I’m very strict about nutrition and proper sleep cycles. My first question is, am I experiencing diminishing returns simply because I HAVE to hit the gym first thing in the morning? There’s a significant efficiency increase with my work when I train beforehand so it’s difficult for me to compromise that with a rest day. My second question is, is there a middle ground? If I’m utilizing active rest, what would be your protocol? Thanks, guys.

I’m curious as to if you’re actually training intensely enough. I’m as passionate about the gym as they come, and mentally rest days are horrible. But physically? 2-3 workouts and I’m DONE. even low volume but to ACTUAL FAILURE is very taxing on the body.

I also have the same experience i eat well sleep well and stress is kept low. Running Push Pull lower 2.0 and i don’t take rest breaks except Sundays cause the gym is closed. I don’t think there’s any diminishing returns to worry about as long you eat well and sleep well. And i too hit gym first thing in the morning.

That’s a great point, Xavier. I’m running the RIR’s exactly how they’re prescribed from Hypertrophy Coach. I know an honest moment of failure, or when I have one or two reps in the tank. I’ve been training for a long time, and feel that I’m at a proper intensity (I’ve gained roughly 6lbs of muscle over the last 10 months while consuming 2,850 calories +-). Trust me. I have many days where I’m beat. I’m 34. But that’s my problem. I just don’t care how taxed my body is. I always hit the gym regardless. I’m not sure if that 6lbs of muscle gain is good, bad, or average, and if it’s average, is it because I’m not resting properly.

Don’t forgot, just cause you can, doesn’t mean you should. I CAN do heroin everyday, but I don’t… for obvious reasons. I’m 20, sleep 8-9 hours a day, get my nutrition in and pretty much sit around or work if i’m not training. So my recovery is there, and mentally I can train everyday, but I don’t. I used to and saw my lifts drop, like you said. I train in the morning as well. Don’t forget it’s not just muscles that need rest, nerves, ligaments and joints need it too and they take longer than muscle and your mentals. I would say active rests are your best bet if you absolutely need to, if your gym has yoga or something like that, that can benefit your recovery may help as well. I personally go golfing if I can’t stand sitting around.

What Week of the Program are you right now? I am doing the Same for already 13 Weeks and this Last Phase is so Intense that more than 3-4 Times per Week training would kill me seriously haha
