ParticipantHi Joe,
Can you expand a bit on your use of BCAAs and EAAs? You have mentioned using both intra-workout, can you explain your reasoning for using both (rather than one or the other as some trainers recommend), and are there specific ratios you aim for?
Also, in your ‘every supplement I take’ video, you mention you no longer take Whey protein due to intolerance, and use aminos instead. I have the same issue, what advice would you give to hit protein goals/stimulate MPS without taking whey?Congrats on adding the forum and making the site even better than it was before!

SimonAround the workout I currently only use EAAs, I don’t recall ever adding additional BCAAs to my essential amino acids, except for leucine post training. Which I still do (10g).
The premise behind essential amino acids during the workout is just to potentially spare your own muscle breakdown. You will absolutely use a certain amount of amino acids during your training as energy, the main idea is for them to come from one’s you’re ingesting circulating in your blood and not from muscle breakdown. And post training I sent to use them in the place of a whey protein, yes with the idea of initiating protein synthesis.
And there are lots of good non-whey options for proteins supplements these days. I have use vegan in the past, and other whole food sources such as egg, and even now Redcon has the MRE products which I believe are a combination of beef Salmon and I think some egg as well too, containing little to no whey. And of course there’s always just whole food.

ParticipantThanks Joe! It was the addition of the redcon1 breach to your intra which made me think you were adding BCAA specifically. I’ll try the EAAs + leucine post-workout. Thanks!

Got it ????. Yea, no breach anymore. It’s either redcon grunt, or Thorne aminos ATM

So what is the purpose of adding leucine when you are already taking EAA’s?

There’s evidence that leucine is really the main driver of the mTOR pathway. And that there are benefits to larger amounts than just found in that specific serving of EAAsJanuary 24, 2020 at 5:05 pm #17254Sean Rodriguez

I workout at 5am and take 2 servings of granola a scoop of MRE lite then breach and grunt for during. But from what I’m reading you take grunt during with cluster bomb. Is cluster bomb still beneficial even when I’m eating right before I go? Also should I still be drinking protein during as well? Sorry but the program is more for me working out in the middle of the day when the only I have is first thing

Hmm okay, wasn’t aware of the amount in the EAA itself so curious to know how much exactly.

You don’t need breach or protein during. Just grunt (EAAs). And I would add carbs. 15-20g is enough for most -
