    hi Joe and Bryce , I hope you are having an awesome day , my question for today is with regards the difference between cable fly and dumbell fly , the argument for the cable is better resistance profile ( thanks you Uncle Joe for all the knowledge ) but I think I heard maybe from Q/A that there is no such thing as constant tension with cables .

    I am correct in assuming that ? can you please go in more depth

    In regards to the chest fly, you are talking about 2 slightly different implements with dumbbells and cables for sure.

    Your dumbbell will have an overload primarily in the stretched part of that range. As you begin to go through the concentric, shortening the muscle,, the load will get less and less great as joints begin to stack in line with gravity.

    Your cables are always set to the outside of you, with the cable always have a degree of “pulling you out” in the concentric if that makes sense. So, although the overload could still be the in the stretch just like the dumbbells, now in the shortened range you also have some resistance unlike DBs.

    Cable offer more consistent resistance than DB’s in this case. Not tension. The tension part is your choice!

    You can have constant tension with either cables or dumbbells but the biggest difference of those two is like Bryce said cables offer a more consistent resistance making the exercise more challenging throughout the whole range of motion.

    I’ll do another video on this to clarify this better. People just don’t use accurate terminology, or really understand the terms they use, and confuse themselves and everyone else. Both DBs and cable apply constant force. Wether they apply constant torque around the train joint, is dependent on set up and position within the exercise ROM. Cables just allow you to manipulate the line of force, relative to your body…without moving your body…whereas for DBs the line of force is always the same direction, so only body position changes can influence torque. (I’m not sure what people are referring to when they say “tension”, the force or the torque? I don’t think they do either)

    Okay, I think I got your point. I just did some reading and needless to say I’m embarrassed by my own stupidity but on to the point.

    What I said is inaccurate because neither cables or free weights can’t provide constant resistance/tension because depending on the acceleration or deceleration rate of the movement changes the load you are using (inertia).
