This might be impossible to answer because there are a variety of applications. I have a well equipped home gym, but it is still growing. I am looking at plate loaded preacher curl machines and plate loaded row machines currently. Is there a significant difference in free weight and these machines? Maybe the machines will eliminate dead spots where you lose tension?
It really depends on the machine. With machines you have more stability which is a plus and imo machines are better especially for back and for safety also. I wouldnt invest on preacher curl machine tho as dumbbels and barbells do the job well enough. You could also do a lot with adjustable pulleys.
