So i injured my lumbar spine (hairline fracture across body of L5 vertebrae) approximately 7-8 years and my lower back has never been the same since. I recently started the ben pollack powerbuilding program. Just started week 2, 3×10 deadlifts at 70% 1RM. Whenever i start getting into heavier and higher volume deadlifts and squats my lower back just kills me. This is frustrating because i so badly want to get stronger and more muscular. I know that conventional deadlifts work the erectors more than sumos, but as conventional deads get heavier, my low back hurts more and more. I really want to improve my conventional deadlift, but feel like at this point i should only be doing heavy sumos to help my back out. My erectors are also a weak point in my physique and i would like to bring them up and i know that conventional deadlifts are best for erector hypertrophy. Any tips for helping improve conventional? Or with history of low back problems should i just stick to sumos? Sorry for the long question, I appreciate everything you guys do on here SO MUCH!!!

@brycebahm Awesome thank you coach Bryce! Quick question as far as your statement about the “neurological wiring” of starting the floor deadlift with the erectors and spine, are you saying i am thinking too much about my back involved in the lift and need to be more focused on my hips and legs initiating the movement? And also any regards as to implementing a safety deadlift into the powerbuilding program, should i just start doing the prescribed rep scheme from that higher starting point or just add some rack deadlifts throughout various days? Sorry for so many questions and thank you again!!!
